Hegenbarth, Josef

Born June 15, 1884, in Češka Kame-nice, in present-day Czechoslovak SSR; died July 27, 1962, in Dresden. German graphic artist and painter. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the German Democratic Republic (GDR, 1955).

Hegenbarth studied at the Academy of Arts in Dresden from 1908 to 1915. He was a professor at the academy from 1946 to 1949. Hegenbarth worked chiefly in india ink, drawing mostly animal scenes. His highly expressive series of drawings are executed in a nervous, ironic technique. Hegenbarth illustrated J. W. von Goethe’s Reynard the Fox (1950), N. V. Gogol’s Dead Souls (1952), and the plays of Shakespeare (1957). He won the National Prize of the GDR in 1954.
