Heinlein, Robert (Anson) (Anson MacDonald, Lyle Monroe, John Riverside, Caleb Saunders, Simon York, pen names) (1907–88) writer; born in Butler, Mo. He studied at the University of Missouri (1925), graduated from Annapolis (1929), and did graduate work in physics at the University of California: Los Angeles (1934). Among other endeavors he worked as an engineer, owned a silver mine, and was the announcer for the Apollo lunar landing (1969). He began writing science fiction in 1947, and is noted for his technical knowledge and detailed settings, as in Stranger in a Strange Land (1961).
