Heiser, Charles B. (Bixler) (1920– ) botanist; born in Cynthiana, Ind. He taught at Washington University, St. Louis (1944–45), then joined the herbarium (1945–46) and the botanical experiment station (1946–47) at the University of California: Davis. He moved to Indiana University (1947–86), where he remained as herbarium director (1986). He made major contributions to the systematics and cytogenetics of flowering plants, studies on the evolution of cultivated plants, and investigations on the relationship of food plants to human populations.
