Heisman Trophy

Annual award given to the outstanding college gridiron football player in the U.S. The trophy was instituted in 1935 by New York City's Downtown Athletic Club and was officially named the following year for the club's first athletic director, the player-coach John Heisman. The winner is determined by a poll of sportswriters.

Hamby STURBRIDGE - The Wendy's High School Heisman Memorial Trophy Award is celebrating 15 years of recognizing excellence in academics and athletics, and Tantasqua Regional High School senior Danielle Cloutier is one of 10 female finalists from Massachusetts to move on to the national level of competition.
Then the name of John Heisman, who died in 1936, was chosen as the symbol for the famous trophy awarded annually to the nation's finest college player.
