Held, Al (1928– ) painter; born in New York City. He studied at the Art Students League, New York (1948–49), in Paris (1950–52), and was based in New York City. After experimenting with a style similar to that of Jackson Pollock, his approach became increasingly geometric. He is known for his large acrylic alphabet paintings (1963–65), with their bold colors and chunky formations.
