Hellas [′hel·əs] (astronomy) The largest impact basin on Mars, approximately 1240 miles (2000 kilometers) across and 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) deep, appearing as a bright circular region in earth-based telescopes. Hellas a name used by several ancient writers for a region in northern Greece. It was applied by Homer to an area in southern Thessaly and by Aristotle to an area in Epirus.
