    0.01 sec.
Heller, Bert

Born Mar. 30, 1912, in Aachen; died Apr. 29, 1970, in Berlin. German painter and graphic artist of the German Democratic Republic (GDR).

Heller studied at the school of applied art in Aachen from 1927 to 1930 and at the Munich Academy of Arts from 1940 to 1942. His works are characterized by the expressive use of line, composition, and color. They include paintings based on the class struggle and socialist construction, for example, the triptych 1525–1844–1949 (1953–57, Berlin City Hall), and portraits, notably that of B. Brecht (1954–55; National Gallery, Berlin). Heller also executed many monumental paintings.

Heller was awarded the National Prize of the GDR in 1951 and 1964.
