Helvellyn (hĕlvĕl`ĭn), mountain, 3,118 ft (950 m) high, in the Lake District, NW England, SE of Keswick. Near the summit is a memorial to Charles Gough, who died (1805) there of exposure. He was commemorated in poems by Sir Walter Scott Scott, Sir Walter, 1771–1832, Scottish novelist and poet, b. Edinburgh. He is considered the father of both the regional and the historical novel.
