Hemet (hĕm`ĭt), city (1990 pop. 36,094), Riverside co., S Calif., in the San Jacinto valley; inc. 1910. Hemet and the surrounding area saw extensive growth in the 1970s and 80s, due to increased local agribusiness and the development of the aircraft industry. Citrus, avocados, vegetables, grain, and nursery stock are grown, and poultry and dairy cattle are raised. Manufactures include carbon products, furniture, and motor vehicles. Mt.
