In central IN, west of Indianapolis; established Dec 20, 1823 from Indian lands. Name Origin: For William Hendricks (1782-1850), IN legislator, governor (1822-25), and U.S. senator (1825-37).

Area (sq mi): 408.88 (land 408.39; water 0.48). Pop per sq mi: 312.20.
Pop 2005: 127,483. State rank: 12. Pop change: 2000-20005 22.50%; 1990-2000 37.50%. Pop 2000: 104,093 (White 96.00%; Black or African American 1.10%; Hispanic or Latino 1.10%; Asian 0.70%; Other 1.60%). Foreign born: 1.60%. Median age: 35.60.
