In east-central VA, north of Petersburg; original county; organized 1634. Name Origin: For the lost town of Henricus (or Henrico), destroyed by Indians in the Massacre of 1622; itself named for Prince Henry Frederick (1594-1612), son of James I (1566-1625) of England. Originally called Henricopolis (the Greek suffix -polis 'city of Henry').

Area (sq mi): 244.60 (land 238.06; water 6.54). Pop per sq mi: 1178.60.
Pop 2005: 280,581. State rank: 5. Pop change: 2000-20005 7.00%; 1990-2000 20.40%. Pop 2000: 262,300 (White 67.90%; Black or African American 24.70%; Hispanic or Latino 2.30%; Asian 3.60%; Other 2.80%). Foreign born: 6.70%. Median age: 36.00.
Income 2000: per capita $26,410; median household $49,185; Pop below poverty level: 6.20%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $35,143-$37,059.
Unemployment 2004: 3.40%. Change from 2000: 0.10%. Median travel time to work: 21.60 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 44.90%.
