Dunant, Jean Henri

Born May 8, 1828, in Geneva; died Oct. 30, 1910, in Heiden, Appenzell Canton. Swiss public figure and writer; founder of the International Red Cross.

In 1859, Dunant organized help to the wounded in the battle of Solferino during the Austro-Sardinian War of 1859 (in Russian, the Austro-Italo-French War of 1859). In Un Souvenir de Solférino, published in 1862, he proposed the creation of an international society to help war casualties. A conference called in Geneva in 1863 upon Dunant’s initiative founded the International Red Cross. Dunant won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1901.

Red Cross founder Henry Dunant won the first Nobel Peace Prize in 1901.
The 1859 Austro-Sardinian war that left tens of thousands of soldiers dead prompted travelling Swiss businessman Henry Dunant to devote the rest of his life to advocating voluntary relief organisations and eventually led to the creation of the Red Cross.
In inspecting the long record of Nobel peace-prize winners since the first award, in 1901, jointly to Henry Dunant (founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross) and to Frederic Passy (founder of a French peace movement), the answer seems to be all of the above, almost as if the committee in Oslo enjoyed being unpredictable, and even confusing.
