Herbert, Robert Louis (1929– ) art historian; born in Worcester, Mass. He studied at Wesleyan University (B.A. 1952), in Paris (1951–52), Yale (M.A. 1954; Ph.D. 1957), and on fellowships in England, Paris, and New Haven, Conn. He worked in a variety of museums in Europe and America, arranging exhibitions and producing catalogs. He also taught at Yale (1954–68), his specialty being 19th- and 20th-century French art.
