Herczeg, Ferenc (fĕ`rĕnts hĕr`tsĕg), 1863–1954, Hungarian writer. Herczeg wrote popular romantic farces as well as historical and social novels, plays, and stories, which were generally ironic and detached in tone. He spoke for the Hungarian gentry, although the mild satire of such social novels as The Golden Violin (1916) partly transcended this orientation. Some of his plays have been translated.
