Herlihy, David

Herlihy, David (Joseph) (1930–91) historian; born in San Francisco. After receiving his doctorate from Yale University (1956), he became the first prominent medievalist to write about women's roles in medieval history. He taught at the university level for over 30 years and held professorships at the universities of Wisconsin, Harvard, and Brown. His books include The Tuscans and Their Families (1984) and Women and Work in Medieval Europe (1989).
