Hermann Klare

Klare, Hermann 

Born May 12, 1909, in Hameln, in what is now the Federal Republic of Germany. German chemist. President of the Academy of Sciences of the German Democratic Republic from 1968 to 1979.

Klare studied at the universities of Heidelberg and Kiel between 1928 and 1933. From 1947 to 1949 he conducted research in the USSR, and from 1949 to 1953 he was employed in Schwarz at a factory for the production of man-made fibers. In 1953 he joined the staff of the Institute of Man-Made Fibers of the Academy of Sciences of the German Democratic Republic, and from 1962 to 1968 he was the director of the institute. Klare’s principal works have been devoted to the chemistry and technology of chemical fibers. He developed techniques for the production of man-made cellulose and polyamide fibers.

Klare received the National Prize in 1951 and 1963, and he was awarded the M. V. Lomonosov Gold Medal in 1976. Klare was named a foreign member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1971.
