Herschbach, Dudley R. (Robert) (1932– ) chemist; born in San Jose, Calif. While at the University of California: Berkeley (1959–63) and Harvard (1963), he worked with others to elucidate the mechanisms of chemical reactions, detailing the sequence of events and energy release. He shared the Nobel Prize in chemistry (1986).
