Herzliya or Herzlia (hĕrtslē`ə), town (1994 pop. 83,800), central Israel, near the Mediterranean Sea. It is a resort with fine beaches, as well as an important electronics center. It was founded in 1924 and named for Theodor Herzl Herzl, Theodor , 1860–1904, Hungarian Jew, founder of modern Zionism. Sent to Paris as a correspondent for the Vienna Neue Frei Presse, he reported on the Dreyfus affair.
