In southwestern ND, south of Dickinson; organized Mar 9, 1883 (prior to statehood) from Stark County. Name Origin: For Mathias K. Hettinger of IL; named by his son-in-law, Erastus A. Williams, a ND territorial legislator and county founder.

Area (sq mi): 1133.70 (land 1132.25; water 1.45). Pop per sq mi: 2.20.
Pop 2005: 2,486. State rank: 41. Pop change: 2000-20005 -8.40%; 1990-2000 -21.20%. Pop 2000: 2,715 (White 98.70%; Black or African American 0.10%; Hispanic or Latino 0.20%; Asian 0.10%; Other 0.90%). Foreign born: 0.10%. Median age: 46.20.
Income 2000: per capita $15,555; median household $29,209; Pop below poverty level: 14.80%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $27,499-$26,971.
