Heyward, Thomas, 1746–1809, political leader and soldier in the American Revolution, signer of the Declaration of Independence, b. near Charleston, S.C. He was a delegate to the Continental Congress (1775–78), but he resigned to become a judge in South Carolina. Heyward fought at Charleston and was captured (1780) when the British took the city.
