In west-central TN, southwest of Nashville; organized Dec 3, 1807 from Dickson County. Name Origin: For Edwin Hickman (?-1791), American explorer killed by Indians.

On southwestern border of KY, southwest of Paducah; established Dec 19, 1821 from Caldwell and Livingston counties. Name Origin: For Capt. Paschal Hickman (?-1813), Army officer. The county comprised the entire KY portion of the Jackson Purchase, bought from the Chickasaw Indians in 1818.
