In west-central MO, north of Springfield; organized Feb 14, 1845 from Benton and Polk counties. Name Origin: For "Old Hickory," the nickname of Andrew Jackson (1767-1845), seventh U.S. president.

Pop 2005: 9,271. State rank: 95. Pop change: 2000-20005 3.70%; 1990-2000 21.90%. Pop 2000: 8,940 (White 97.00%; Black or African American 0.10%; Hispanic or Latino 0.80%; Asian 0.10%; Other 2.30%). Foreign born: 1.00%. Median age: 49.70.
