Hicks, Wilson (1897–1970) photo editor; born in Sedalia, Mo. Picture editor at the Kansas City Star, he came to New York in 1928 where he became executive editor of the Associated Press. Photographic editor at Life Magazine (1937–1950), he built the staff from 4 to 40 photographers, making assignments and developing the photo essay for which Life became famous. He was a professor of photojournalism at the University of Miami from 1955 to 1970.
