On the southern border of TX, west of Harlingen; organized Jan 24, 1852 from Cameron County. Name Origin: Either for Guadalupe Hidalgo, D.F., Mexico, or possibly in honor of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla (1753-1811), Mexican priest and hero of the Mexican war for Independence from Spain. Spanish 'nobleman.'
