Hierro

Hierro 

an island in the Atlantic Ocean; one of the Canary Islands (territory of Spain). Population, 5,500 (1970). Hierro covers an area of 275 sq km and rises to an elevation of 1,501 m. The island has hot springs. The climate is tropical and dry. The vegetation consists mainly of endemic species, such as the Canary pine and Canary date palm. Grapes and other crops are cultivated, and goats, sheep, and cattle are raised. The main city is Valverde. Until 1884 a meridian passing through Hierro at approximately 18° W long, was considered the prime meridian by several countries.
