51 JC176 Hoadly (1676-1761) was one of the most influential religious and political thinkers of his time, constantly challenging High Churchmen on the nature of the Church of England and civil government in England.
Liberals of the day, like me, recognized the broadly defined "immorality" of it all, but even (or especially) the High Churchmen translated that primarily into a legal response.
The genius of the confession is its room for high churchmen (like this Edwardian high churchman) and the most fervent evangelical.
