Hauser (1973:236) confirms this when he refers to the artistic tastes of the era known as late Gothic as "more 'vulgar', more realistic and more earthy and playful" than the preceding period of high Gothic.
There are exquisite examples of Byzantine ivories, Gothic enamel work from Limoges, stone figures, wooden angels, radiant alter pieces, a rare "table fountain," climaxing with the High Gothic polychrome wood and stone sculptures by Tilman Riemenschneider created in the late 1400s.
And surprised he was - for when she proudly showed him the four-inch high gothic letters on her lower back, he found it impossible not to notice she'd spelt his name wrong.
