Highet, Gilbert Arthur (hī`ət), 1906–78, American classicist, b. Glasgow, Scotland. In 1951 Highet became a citizen of the United States. He was a professor of Greek and Latin at Columbia Univ. from 1938 to 1950 and Anthon professor of Latin language and literature (1950–72). His writings include The Classical Tradition (1949); The Art of Teaching (1950); Juvenal the Satirist (1954); Poets in a Landscape (1957); The Anatomy of Satire (1962); Vergil's Aeneid (1972). His wife, the novelist

Helen MacInnes (məkĭn`əs), 1907–85, b. Glasgow, is noted for her fast-paced, intricately plotted novels of espionage, including Above Suspicion (1941), While Still We Live (1944), Decision at Delphi (1960), The Snare of the Hunter (1974), and Ride a Pale Horse (1984).
