Born Nov. 14, 1668, in Genoa; died Nov. 16, 1745, in Vienna. Austrian architect; one of the foremost representatives of Austrian baroque.

Hildebrandt studied in Rome under C. Fontana. He served as military engineer in the army of Prince Eugene of Savoy, becoming court engineer in 1701. Most of his works, which include the Daun-Kinsky Palace, the Upper Belvedere (1714–16), and the Lower Belvedere (1720–23) in Vienna and Schloss Mirabell in Salzburg (reconstructed 1721–27), are outstanding for their rich, rhythmic articulation of the facades, abundant ornamentation, and strictly symmetrical interior layout.
