On central southern border of NH, south of Concord; original county, organized Apr 29, 1769. Name Origin: For Wills Hill (1718-93), 1st Earl of Hillsborough, English secretary of state for the colonies (1768-72). Also spelled Hillsboro. Some also note that one of the original grantees of land was Col. John Hill of MA.

Name Origin: For Wills Hills, Earl of Hillsborough (1718-93), Irish peer and secretary of state for the colonies (1768-72) who had received a large grant of land in FL.
