Hintze Ribeiro, Ernesto Rodolfo

    0.01 sec.
Hintze Ribeiro, Ernesto Rodolfo

Born Nov. 7, 1849, in Ponta Delgada; died Aug. 1, 1907. Portuguese political figure. Doctor of law; lawyer.

Hintze Ribeiro held various government posts. He was prime minister from 1893 to 1897, from 1900 to 1904, and in 1906. As a member (from 1878) and official leader (from 1900) of the Regeneration Party, he was constantly forced to wage a struggle in the parliament both against the Progressists, who opposed the Regenerators, and against the left wing of the party itself. Hintze Ribeiro frequently repressed those in the political opposition. In 1901, in an attempt to strengthen the conservative elements in the parliament, he implemented a law that increased the representation of rural districts at the expense of large cities.
