Hittorf principle [′hi·dȯrf ‚prin·sə·pəl]
(electronics) The principle that a discharge between electrodes in a gas at a given pressure does not necessarily occur between the closest points of the electrodes if the distance between these points lies to the left of the minimum on a graph of spark potential versus distance.
