Hiwassee River

Hiwassee River

River, southeastern U.S. Rising in the Blue Ridge in northern Georgia, it flows 132 mi (213 km) into North Carolina and southeastern Tennessee to join the Tennessee River at the Chickamauga Reservoir. It has three major Tennessee Valley Authority dams. The endangered snail darter was transplanted to the Hiwassee in the 1970s.

From 1998 through 2001, nearly 260,000 juvenile mussels of eight endangered species and one of special concern were propagated and released to two major river systems (Clinch/ Powell and Hiwassee River systems) to augment declining mussel populations.
Fishing in this area, particularly along the Hiwassee River, is outstanding.
There are many good locations--Citicoe Creek Wilderness in the Cherokee National Forest and the Hiwassee River, both in Tennessee, are particularly good, but almost every creek and river in the mountains of western North Carolina provides opportunities that are just as good.
