Hobbs, Alfred Charles (1812–91) lock expert; born in Boston, Mass. He tried several trades before he turned to manufacturing locks. Famous for picking the locks of other companies to demonstrate their inadequacy, he formed Hobbs, Ashley & Company in London, England, and Hobbs, Hart & Company in the U.S.A.
