Hobhouse, Leonard Trelawney, 1864–1929, English philosopher, sociologist, and journalist. He taught at Oxford and at the Univ. of London. Hobhouse sought to show with evidence from anthropology and comparative psychology that the evolution of the human mind was correlated with the development of societies. A liberal, Hobhouse ardently opposed imperialism. His books include The Theory of Knowledge (1896), Morals in Evolution (1906), and Social Development (1924). |
