Hofmeister 

(Russian gofmeister), a court function in medieval Germany (an honorary title in the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th in Germany) and a court rank (and function) from the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th in Russia. The Oberhofmeister and the Hofmeister serving under him were responsible for the management of the court and administration of the court staff and directed court ceremonial functions. In the courts of the German princes the Oberhofmeister presided over the court tribunal and council for the prince and was a deputy of the prince in administrative matters.
