Hofuf (hōf f`) or Al Hufuf (äl h –), town (1993 pop. 225,847), E Saudi Arabia. Textile manufacturing, food processing, and Arabian horse breeding are important economic activities. It is also a trade center for dates, wheat, and fruit and has a large mosque. Originally called Hasa, it was the center of the Karmathian movement in the 10th cent. Haying taught at Saudi universities for two academic years (1984-85 at King Faisal University in Hofuf and 1998-99 at King Saud University in Riyadh), I can corroborate many of Pipes' assertions and findings. It brightened our days and nights as we loaded the Saudi Hofuf. |
