Hofuf

Hofuf (hōff`) or Al Hufuf (äl h–), town (1993 pop. 225,847), E Saudi Arabia. Textile manufacturing, food processing, and Arabian horse breeding are important economic activities. It is also a trade center for dates, wheat, and fruit and has a large mosque. Originally called Hasa, it was the center of the Karmathian movement in the 10th cent. The oil fields of Shimanya are nearby.

Haying taught at Saudi universities for two academic years (1984-85 at King Faisal University in Hofuf and 1998-99 at King Saud University in Riyadh), I can corroborate many of Pipes' assertions and findings.
It brightened our days and nights as we loaded the Saudi Hofuf.
