Hohe Tauern

Hohe Tauern (hō`ə tou`ərn), range of the Eastern Alps, S Austria, extending c.70 mi (110 km) E from the Italian border. It rises to 12,460 ft (3,798 m) in the Grossglockner. The Tauern railroad (built 1901–8) traverses the range through a tunnel (5 mi/8 km long). It is a tourist spot for skiers and mountain climbers.

Hohe Tauern

Segment of the eastern Alps, in southern Austria. It extends 70 mi (110 km) east from the Italian border in Tirol. Its many lofty peaks include the Grossglockner, Austria's highest. The region is popular for mountain climbing and skiing.

Hohe Tauern National Park One of the last natural wilderness areas in Europe, this park is well known for its flora and fauna.
Other classic alpine excursions within reach are the two mountain reservoirs in the shadow of the Kitzsteinhorn, trips along the Grossglockner Hochalpen-strasse, which crosses the Hohe Tauern Mountains to the south, and the magnificent Krimml waterfalls to the west.
