Hohe Tauern (hō`ə tou`ərn), range of the Eastern Alps, S Austria, extending c.70 mi (110 km) E from the Italian border. It rises to 12,460 ft (3,798 m) in the Grossglockner. The Tauern railroad (built 1901–8) traverses the range through a tunnel (5 mi/8 km long). It is a tourist spot for skiers and mountain climbers. Hohe TauernSegment of the eastern Alps, in southern Austria. It extends 70 mi (110 km) east from the Italian border in Tirol. Its many lofty peaks include the Grossglockner, Austria's highest.
