In south-central NC, west of Fayetteville; organized Feb 7, 1911 from Cumberland and Robeson counties. Name Origin: For Gen. Robert F. Hoke (1837-1912), a Confederate Army officer and railway president.

Area (sq mi): 392.34 (land 391.21; water 1.12). Pop per sq mi: 104.80.
Pop 2005: 41,016. State rank: 59. Pop change: 2000-20005 21.90%; 1990-2000 47.20%. Pop 2000: 33,646 (White 41.60%; Black or African American 37.60%; Hispanic or Latino 7.20%; Asian 0.80%; Other 17.00%). Foreign born: 5.80%. Median age: 30.00.
Income 2000: per capita $13,635; median household $33,230; Pop below poverty level: 17.70%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $17,271-$17,611.
