Holden, Edward Singleton (1846–1914) astronomer; born in St. Louis, Mo. A West Point graduate (1870), he taught mathematics for the United States Navy (1873–81), directed the Washburn Observatory in Wisconsin (1881–85), and designed and directed the Lick Observatory in California (1888–98). In 1901 he became the librarian of the U.S. Military Academy and wrote several books, including three collections of children's stories. How to thank TFD for its existence?
