Holden, William Woods (1818–92) journalist, governor; born in Orange County, N.C. A self-educated Whig political writer, he became Democratic editor of the North Carolina Standard in 1843, advocating secession from the Union. Switching parties again, as North Carolina's Republican governor (1868–70) he pandered to carpetbaggers, using the militia to suppress his opposition. Impeached for corruption, he returned to journalism. How to thank TFD for its existence?
