Holland, Clifford (1883–1924) civil engineer; born in Somerset, Mass. He graduated from Harvard (B.S. 1906) and became the tunnel engineer (1914–16) and the division engineer (1916–19) for the Public Service Commission. As chief engineer (1919–24) for the New York State and New Jersey Interstate Bridge and Tunnel Commissions, he planned and built the first twin-tube, subaqueous vehicular tunnel, named for him in 1924 and opened in 1927, crossing under the Hudson River between lower Manhattan and New Jersey.
