Holland, John Philip (1840–1914) inventor; born in Liscannor, Ireland. With his plan for a submarine, he emigrated to the U.S.A. in 1873. After rejection by the U.S. Navy, his work was sponsored by expatriate Irish nationalists. Not until 1900 did the navy accept his Holland as their first submarine. He built submarines for various navies but got into financial trouble and ended up experimenting with airplanes.
