Born Oct. 18, 1893, in Green-dale; died Aug. 5, 1961, in Wellington. New Zealand statesman.

During World War I, Holland served in the expeditionary forces in Europe. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1935 and became leader of the bourgeois National Party in 1940. Holland was prime minister from 1949 to 1957. He initiated cruel measures in combating New Zealand’s strike movement; his government suppressed the strike of 1951, the largest in the history of New Zealand. Holland’s foreign policy favored orientation toward the USA. Under his leadership the government signed agreements on the creation of the ANZUS (1951) and SEATO (1954) military blocs.
