On northern border of FL panhandle, north of Panama City; organized Jan 8, 1848 from Walton and Calhoun counties. Name Origin: For Holmes Creek, which forms the eastern boundary of the county. The creek was named for the valley, which was probably named for a Creek Indian chief, killed (1818) by troops under the command of Andrew Jackson (1767-1845); or possibly for Thomas J. Holmes, a settler from NC about 1830.

Area (sq mi): 488.71 (land 482.45; water 6.26). Pop per sq mi: 39.90.
Pop 2005: 19,264. State rank: 55. Pop change: 2000-20005 3.80%; 1990-2000 17.70%. Pop 2000: 18,564 (White 88.90%; Black or African American 6.50%; Hispanic or Latino 1.90%; Asian 0.40%; Other 3.30%). Foreign born: 1.70%. Median age: 37.50.

In central MS, north of Jackson; organized Feb 19, 1833 from Yazoo County. Name Origin: For David Holmes (1769-1832), U.S. representative from VA (1797-1809), MS territorial governor (1809-17), state governor (1817-20; 1826), and U.S. senator (1820-25).
