Holometabolism
a type of postembryonic development of insects of a series of taxonomic groups (Coleoptera, Neuroptera, Lepidoptera, Trichoptera, Hymenoptera, Díptera, and others). In this type of development the larvae leave the eggs bearing no resemblance to the adult insect. It is characterized by the absence of compound eyes and by the incomplete segmentation or reduction of legs. The transformation of the larvae into adult insects takes place in the pupa stage, during which the pupae do not eat. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
