Homolle was director of the French Archaeological School in Athens from 1890 to 1904 and in 1912and 1913. He was director of the Louvre from 1904 to 1911 and of the National Library in Paris from 1913 to 1923.

Many ancient sculptures and inscriptions were also uncovered. From 1892 to 1903, Homolle excavated at Delphi, and his results were published in Les Fouilles de Delphes (The Excavations at Delphi; vols. 1–5, 1907–55). Homolle is the author of many studies on ancient inscriptions, published for the most part in the Bulletin de correspondance héllénique.
