Honiara (hō'nēär`ə), town (1986 pop. 30,413), capital of the Solomon Islands. Located on Guadalcanal in the SW Pacific, Honiara was rebuilt to replace the former capital of Tulaghi at the end of World War II and occupies the site of an important American campaign against the Japanese. The town now has an expanded harbor, a reconstructed Government House, and a national museum.

Honiara

Town (pop., 1999 est.: 49,107), capital of the Solomon Islands, South Pacific Ocean. Situated at the mouth of the Mataniko River on the north coast of Guadalcanal, Honiara is a port and communications centre which trades chiefly in coconuts, timber, fish, and some gold. It developed during World War II around the site of a U.S. military headquarters and became the capital in 1952.

Aug 29, 2009 Solomon Islands International flights in and out of Honiara, Solomon Islands, have resumed after a 12-hour stoppage following a nationwide strike by government workers of whom Civil Aviation officers are members.
IMMP has established its office in Honiara, Solomon Islands, with local environmental activist Lawrence Makili working as the new director for monitoring in the Pacific islands.
Honiara, Solomon Islands (ACNS)--Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, on an eight-day visit to the Solomon Islands in August, urged islanders to become a model of reconciliation for the wider world.
