On northwestern border of OR, east of Portland; organized Jun 23, 1908 from Wasco County. Name Origin: For the river and the town; the river was named for either Samuel Hood (1724-1816), or for Arthur William Acland Hood (1824-1901), admirals in the British Navy.

Area (sq mi): 533.56 (land 522.35; water 11.21). Pop per sq mi: 40.70.
Pop 2005: 21,284. State rank: 26. Pop change: 2000-20005 4.30%; 1990-2000 20.80%. Pop 2000: 20,411 (White 70.70%; Black or African American 0.60%; Hispanic or Latino 25.00%; Asian 1.50%; Other 19.10%). Foreign born: 16.40%. Median age: 35.30.
