Hornblower, Josiah (1729–1809) inventor, public official; born in Staffordshire, England. Hired by Col. John Schuyler, he emigrated to New Jersey (1753), bringing engine parts that were later assembled into the first steam engine in America (1755); it was used to pump water from a copper mine. He was a member of the New Jersey legislature (1779–81), the Continental Congress (1785–86), and judge of the Essex County Court (1798–1809). How to thank TFD for its existence?
